چکیده

Extensive studies that have been conducted on the Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3 (PMN) family of relaxor ferroelectrics have led to the establishment and acceptance of the ‘‘spacecharge’’ model as a basis for explaining their structures and dielectric properties. In this model, the arrangement of the metal cations on the octahedral sites of the perovskite structure is interpreted in terms of the formation of negatively charged ordered nanodomains that are dispersed in a positively charged disordered matrix. The primary experimental support for this interpretation has come from the apparent absence of any growth of the domains or change in the degree of ordering as the heat treatment is extended. Here, we report on experiments that have been conducted on the tantalate relaxor, Pb(Mg1/3Ta2/3)O3 (PMT), and its solid solutions with PbZrO3, in which the size of the domains and the degree of cation ordering have been increased by two orders of magnitude through annealing that has been conducted at a temperature of 1325°C. Moreover, fully ordered ceramics that are comprised of large domains retain relaxor behavior. These results cannot be explained by the space-charge model and support a charge-balanced, ‘‘random-site’’ model for the ordering of the metal cations.

High temperature thermal treatments were used to modify the cation order in several tantalate and niobate members of the Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3 (PMN) family of relaxors. The observation of complete 1:1 structural order in several compositions, and the refined cation occupancies of well-ordered samples conflict with the predictions of the “space charge” model, and support the “random site” description...

Influence of Cation Order on the Dielectric Properties of Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3-Pb(Sc1/2Nb1/2)O3 (PMN-PSN) Relaxor Ferroelectrics

The effect of the B-site cation chemistry and ordering on the dielectric properties of solid solutions in the (1-x)Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3-Pb(Sc1/2Nb1/2)O3 (PMN-PSN) perovskite system was examined in samples with 0.1 ≤ x ≤ 0.9. Thermal annealing treatments were effective in inducing long-range B-site order in the samples within this compositional range. The well-ordered, large chemical domain ceramics...

1 : 1 Ordered Domain Growth in Pb ( Mg 1 / 3 Ta 2 / 3 ) O 3 – La ( Mg 2 / 3 Ta 1 / 3 ) O 3 Relaxor Ferroelectric Perovskites

Single-phase perovskite solid solutions are formed across the entire (1 − x)Pb(Mg1/3Ta2/3)O3–xLa(Mg2/3Ta1/3)O3 (PLMT) pseudobinary system. Although as-sintered (1300°C, 3 h) samples with x ≤ 0.1 adopt a phase-separated, “PMN-type” microstructure comprising small (2–3 nm) ordered domains dispersed in a disordered matrix, extensive domain growth and complete order can be induced by extended therm...

Evolution of nanodomains during the electric-field-induced relaxor to normal ferroelectric phase transition in a Sc-doped Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3 ceramic

Sc doping in Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3 enhances the B-site 1:1 cation order significantly but promotes the ferroelectric polar order moderately. At low doping levels, the electrical polar domains remain at the nanometer scale and the relaxor ferroelectric behavior is preserved. A normal ferroelectric state can be triggered with electric fields from the relaxor state at lower temperatures. This electric-...
